DOS Seasve or Windows?

Subject: DOS seasave and Windows 98

Hi All,
I am having problems getting the DOS version of seasave to run under
Windows 98. We (the techs on the Cape Hatteras) still prefer the look and
feel of the old DOS software to the cluttered look of the windows version.
This is by no means a scientific survey, just a few questions to see if
there is anyone out there that sees this the same way we do.

1. Are you running the DOS or windows version of seabird software?

2. If you are running the windows version, do you like it or are you
running it because the DOS version will not run?

3. Are you running DOS, Windows 95, Windows 98 or other operating system?

4. If you are running Windows 98 what did you have to do to get seasave to
run?

Changes to config.sys?

Changes to autoexec.bat?

Other?

Thanks Dwight

Hi all,

It seems as though I left out a few details the first time I sent this
message. That is why I'm sending it a second time with a few more details.

We are trying to run the DOS version of seasave with Windows 98. We have
been trying to use the RS232 connection instead of the GPIB. The problem we
are having does not exhibit any symptoms that aid much in troubleshooting.
You all know the first screen where you are given three choices, Display
archived data, collect real-time data and something else. Seasave seems to
operate OK until F10 is pressed then the screen described above is
displayed with the real-time choice in yellow instead of white and then
nothing happens. We have two deck units and two computers. Both deck units
work with the old computer running Windows 95 and the RS232 connection.
Neither deck unit will work with the windows 98 computer, but when tested
with hyperterm the serial ports work OK. I hope these details will shed
some more light on the problem.

At this time I have only received three responses and all of them are still
running the DOS version of seasave. Is anyone running the windows version?
Is Sea-Bird aware that the DOS version is still the preferred way to go?

Dwight:
We are still using the DOS version of SEASAVE because I still prefer it, and because we have had the windows version exhibit a few bugs (have not tried the latest version).
We always boot to DOS to run SEASAVE. Cause I do not trust the Windows DOS interface to run SEASAVE properly.
Keep up the good work.

We have been running the Windows version for some time on Windows 98 and NT.
There have been some problems with the earlier versions but things have
settled down now. We may have had some problems while using the windows
version on Win 2000. We dropped back to Windows NT, but several other
changes were made at the same time so I am not sure if it was truly a Win
2000 problem.

Oddly enough I have been playing with the beta of the next version of
Windows (code name whistler) and have found that several programs that wont
run on NT or Windows 2000 will run on Whistler.

By the way have you tried the DOS version on NT? Are you running in full
screen mode? Make sure you do not have any other software running in the
background when using either the DOS or Windows version, this includes virus
software and time synchronizers such as Tardis or K9.

Dwight,
We have been running SeaSave for Windows on Win95 machines
for some time. We have successfully run with both serial and GPIB,
we use GPIB exclusively (ran out of serial ports for the other
stuff). Early versions of the WinSeaSave software were a little
funky, but we use it routinely now with no real problems. It is much
more friendly than the DOS version, and we (and our users) prefer it
to the older DOS software.
Can provide more details if you'd like them.
